All the pilots have now arrived at the Elchingen airfield. Many have already had the chance to explore the region by glider over the past few days. On Wednesday, with excellent thermals, some pilots flew really long distances.
Today has marked the first official training day of the 14th Junior Gliding World Championships in Aalen-Elchingen.
Amid hot, midsummer temperatures, a training task was set for the first time today for the 79 participants.
This Junior Gliding World Championship features two classes: the Club Class and the Standard Class.
World Championship Director Bernd Schmid announced the following tasks today:
An area task from Aalen-Elchingen to Hayingen. From there to Lake Brombach and back to Elchingen.
Average distance: 275.12 km
For the Standard Class, today’s training task was a triangular flight:
From Elchingen heading north. The first waypoint was Schillingsfürst. From there, the flight continued to Eichstätt and then back to Elchingen. The distance was 199.85 km.
For the world’s best junior glider pilots, these were just minor tasks. But they were ideal for training. Incidentally, the training day isn’t just good practice for the pilots but also for the retrieval crews and the entire organization for optimizing all procedures and processes.
During the Junior World Championships, over 50 members are currently volunteering their time.
